Wake up 400 metres from the sea

Lazy Wave is a two-floor, 57 m² bungalow in La Mata — the quiet, seaside end of Torrevieja, where things move slower than in the resorts next door. The wide sandy beach is a five-minute walk: barefoot, in flip-flops, towel over your shoulder. That's the whole distance between your morning coffee on the balcony and your first swim.

The name is not an accident. This place is built for one kind of holiday — the kind with no schedule, where the hardest decision of the day is pool or sea.

The space

The bungalow comfortably sleeps a family or two couples — up to seven guests:

• A bedroom with a double bed, for the people who came here to actually rest.
• A second bedroom with two single beds, with room for a third. Perfect for kids, or for friends who like their own space.
• A sofa bed in the living room — space for two more, if the holiday plans grew at the last minute.

An open staircase links the two floors, so 57 square metres never feel cramped: the bedrooms and the living space are genuinely separate. There's a flat-screen TV in the living room, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi throughout, and a proper kitchen — induction hob, oven and dishwasher — enough to actually cook dinner rather than just reheat one.

The living room opens onto the balcony. In practice the line between inside and outside disappears on day one: breakfast happens outdoors and the doors stay open until evening.

Pool, sauna, jacuzzi — and a roof above it all

This is the part that makes guests extend their stay.

Private pools for residents only — no crowds, no racing anyone to a sunbed at eight in the morning. One of them is heated all year round, which makes a November morning by the water as real as a July one — on the Costa Blanca that is the difference between a season and twelve months. A sauna and jacuzzi for those evenings when a full day on the beach leaves your body asking for warm water. And above it all, a roof terrace with a barbecue — where, realistically, most of your evenings will happen, with the sea visible over the neighbours' rooftops. The Costa Blanca has the convenient habit of setting its sun over the land, so the sky turns pink at exactly the moment the heat breaks and the coals catch.

The car goes on a free private parking space on the grounds — no circling the streets at midnight looking for a gap.

La Mata

La Mata is the version of the Spanish coast where Spaniards still live. A seafront promenade with bars where the orders are placed in Spanish, a market, a bakery with morning napolitanas, and a Blue Flag beach that runs for kilometres. The first restaurants — Casa Ulpiano, Chiringuito Pura Vida, Sunshine — are three hundred metres from the door.

Right next door lies the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja — a nature park with two salt lagoons, one of which, on the Torrevieja side, can turn a startling shade of pink. The paths around the lagoons make the best morning walk in the area, before the heat sets in.

Torrevieja — the harbour, the restaurants, the whole evening buzz — is close enough to drop in for dinner and far enough that you never hear it. Alicante airport is about forty minutes away (38 km); Murcia a little over an hour.

• Up to 7 guests — above four we use the extra bed and the sofa bed.
